Areas of Expertise & Civic Involvements
Butler’s research focuses primarily on financial security for women across the lifespan. A current research focus is on the experiences of home care workers, a part of our labor force that is largely female and often older. She teaches social welfare policy and legislative advocacy to undergraduate and graduate students in social work. During her nearly three decades in Maine, she has worked closely with two organizations – Maine Women’s Policy Center and Maine Equal Justice Partners – on numerous research projects carried out to inform state level policy impacting low-income populations. Topics have included welfare, Medicaid, Maine’s Parents as Scholars Program, and paid sick days.
